Set List – 03/12/17

highlights:

We sang What A Beautiful Name for this first time this past weekend. In classic fashion, Brooke Ligertwood (Fraser) hit another home run with this song. We’re currently in our Global Outreach series. The theme, No Longer Strangers, is meant to signify that there are no strangers in the family of God (Ephesians 2:11-22). Salvation through Jesus is not for a specific people group or nation, but for all who call upon His name for forgiveness of their sins (Romans 10:9-13). I chose the song, What A Beautiful Name, to further communicate this truth. It is truly beautiful to be considered a son of God through the Spirit’s power extended to me by the blood of Jesus (Romans 8:12-17). I did make some minor changes to the song lyrics though (spoiler alert). Instead of singing the original lyrics for verse 2:

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus, You brought heaven down
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now

We sang my revised lyrics:

You saw our need, You saw our weakness
So Jesus, You died once for all
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now

I made this change because the Father, Son and Spirit existed in heaven long before us (John 1:1-4). They didn’t need us there but rather, through Jesus, we are invited to partake in their fellowship (John 14:15-21). This isn’t because of anything we have done or are, but only by God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). He knew that we needed a way to be made right with Him so He sent Jesus to die and make a way for us (John 3:16-17). That’s a beautiful thing. The change didn’t compromise the song melody or flow, which was nice because it didn’t throw off anyone who already knew the song. It was a low key yet necessary and worthwhile change in my opinion.
